How do I prune a grapevine?

+2 votes

My grapevine has went crazy and engulfed a large tree. Do I need to prune it back, and if so, how much pruning should I do?

There are two grapevines planted approximately 10 feet apart. They are producing prolifically; however, the vines themselves have gotten out of control. I want to be able to put the grapevines on an arbor and place a bench under the grapes. Any ideas?

Cut down the previous year's growth every winter, going in about six buds deep. Leave renewal buds for next season's crop, depending on what you want the plant to yield.

So, I wait until winter to prune? Or is it only til after the first frost?
