Walmart has announced that it is discontinuing sales of a number of military-grade weapons, including the AR-15. The timing of the announcement being the same day as two members of a Virginia newscrew being murdered on live television prompted some speculation about the news being political, but a company spokesman denies that as motivation. In truth, sales of such weapons have been declining for sometime in Walmart stores, so the news was expected for some time already. The pressure to make this move was also a result of the wishes of many Walmart shareholders, especially in light of the AR-15 being used in the Sandy Hook elementary school and Aurora movie theater shootings.
The semiautomatic weapons being discontinued were sold in less than 1 out of 3 Walmart locations. The newly freed shelf space will instead be devoted to shotguns and other weapons.
