Discovering your weaknesses can be challenging. It isn't always easy to be honest with yourself about any shortcomings you may have. However, the only way to overcome your weaknesses is by first acknowledging them. The following tips will help you discover your own personal weaknesses so that you can grow as a person:

  1. Make a list of situations that frighten you or make you uncomfortable. For instance, perhaps the thought of speaking in front of a room full of people makes you extremely uncomfortable. Usually situations make us feel nervous or ill at ease because we lack the necessary skills to deal with them.

After you make your list, spend some time evaluating exactly what it is about each situation that makes you uncomfortable. In the case of public speaking, it could be that you are worried about your appearance or about looking foolish if you say the wrong thing. In this case, your weakness might be that you are too concerned about what other people think of you. If, on the other hand, you are more worried that you don't have anything worthwhile to say to a room full of people, your weakness may be that you lack confidence.
  2. Ask your friends and family members if they can identify any areas where you may be lacking. Don't allow any of their responses to make you feel offended. Instead, carefully consider what they have to say and evaluate it to see if there is a grain of truth in it. [1]
  3. Go back over past work evaluations. Did your boss bring up any areas where you could improve? Sometimes these evaluations can help you see yourself from a different perspective, which in turn can help you spot weaknesses that you may have otherwise overlooked. [1]
  4. Make a list of areas where you frequently fall short. For instance, do you have a hard time finishing projects once you start them? Do you find yourself procrastinating until the last minute on important tasks? Are you always late for work or for appointments? Identifying these negative patterns in your life can help you spot other areas where you may be able to improve.

Once you identify your weaknesses, don't become consumed by them. Instead, work on overcoming them. This may involve taking classes, forcing yourself to try new things, overcoming bad habits or visualizing yourself performing well in a situation that would have previously made you uncomfortable. Alternatively, there is nothing that says that you need to overcome every weakness. Instead, you could work with other people who fill in the gaps where you are lacking. For instance, if you are great at coming up with ideas but bad at presenting them, you could partner with someone who was an excellent public speaker to present your ideas for you, while you focus your attention on what you are good at -- coming up with new and innovative ideas and developing them to their full potential.
