For the most part, it doesn't really matter what order you play the Pok√©mon games in since they are almost all stand-alone games. The only exceptions are Black 2 and White 2, which are sequels to Black and White.

A lot of people like to start by playing the games in the original order that they were released. If you play them in reverse order, the games will seem clunkier and less sophisticated the further back you go. By starting with the earliest releases first, on the other hand, each new game you try will be a step up from the one you were just playing. [1]

Here's a list of the games in chronological order including the year they were released in the U.S. case you decide you want to play them in order: [2]

  • Red - 1998
  • Blue - 1998
  • Yellow - 1998
  • Gold and Silver - 2000
  • Crystal - 2001
  • Ruby and Sapphire - 2003
  • FireRed and LeafGreen - 2004
  • Emerald - 2005
  • Diamond and Pearl - 2007
  • Platinum - 2009
  • HeartGold and SoulSilver - 2010
  • Black and White - 2010
  • Black 2 and White 2 - 2012
  • X and Y - 2013
  • Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire - 2014

If you prefer, you can also check out all of the different games in the order in which they were released in this video:
