I see that there is both a ruling party and a religious party. Who is it that actually calls the shots?

Iran has a quite unusual and complex political system. It combines elements of a modern Islamic theocracy with democratic principles. The country has a network of unelected institutions controlled by a highly powerful conservative Supreme Islamic Leader. He is countered by a president and parliament elected by the people of the country. During the whole of last decade the country has seen a struggle between the Supreme Leader and the elected president.
