Just as you didn't learn to drive in a fancy expensive car, you aren't going to learn to surf on a fancy expensive board. A soft board is ideal for a beginner as you won't be injured as easily when you fall off your board. Surfing is a bit of a challenge to a beginner unless you're already a snowboarder and know how to keep your balance well. However, the soft board will only be used for a few lessons so you may wish to simply rent this board until you get the hang of things. (1)

You'll want your first surfboard to be approximately 8 feet in length. It should be lightweight enough to carry easily and durable. As you progress you can move your way up to some of the better boards which are listed in more detail in our second resource. (2)
