Why do people spend so much money on weddings?

0 votes
The other day I read an article that said that the average cost of a wedding in the U.S. is over $28,000 - that's crazy! I've even heard of people spending as much as $50,000-100,000 on their weddings. To me that seems like such a colossal waste of money.
I guess I just can't understand why people would want to spend that much on their wedding...or why they would want to start their married life with thousands of dollars in debt. Is it that people get so obsessed with the idea of the "perfect" wedding that they lose sight of reality? Is it because they want to outdo or impress their friends? Do they feel obligated to invite everyone they know? Why do you think people spend so much money on weddings?

I spent maybe $200 on my wedding. We got rings, had a few people over including a person that could officiate, and then we came out to the Star Trek theme. The lady officiating the wedding said it was the most beautiful and intimate ceremony she's seen. I'm not religious, but we both did write custom vows. It was short, to the point, and perfect right in our own home.

I don't get it either why love is calculated in money. It would seem that it's more of a status thing, and that's too bad. A person being with you, I believe, should be there for you and not what you do or do not have. I know this is my personal opinion, but money spoils a lot of things.

Do what you wish for a wedding. Here is an awesome long-lasting rings for cheap: http://www.amazon.com/Tungsten-Metal-Wedding-Comfort-Finish/dp/B00A7ZZLD4
