One idea would be to go on a road trip within your state to see cities you haven't been to before. You will find that a lot of places around you are great to explore if you're on a budget and can't go too far. The other great thing about this kind of a trip is that you can take along friends and family to have a good time with them. Figure out the gas prices in your area and where you're traveling to see if it's going to cost you too much if you're on a budget[1].

A couple more tips would be to go on a last minute cruise, or to go camping[2]. The great thing about a last minute cruise is that the line is going to have a lot of deals so that they can make as much as possible and fill up the last seats. As the site in the reference indicates, you can go on a cruise that day for as little as $30. Camping, of course, is great if you want to get out into nature with family or on your own and doesn't cost all that much because lodging is generally free.

According to the U.S. News and World Report, there are a number of affordable vacation spots in the United States. Topping the list is Yellowstone National Park, which has a lot to see and do, but only charges a nominal fee for entry. Consider taking a road trip to the park to save on airfare. Nashville is also a great city to visit. The hotels are relatively inexpensive, and there is great food and live music. Another destination to consider is San Antonio. Rather than staying right in the city, however, seek out lodging in Alamo Heights or King William, as it is much less expensive.

A few other ideas include Grand Rapids, Kansas City, and Charlottesville.
