How can I concentrate better when studying?

I have a hard time staying focused when I study. Do you have any suggestions for how I could improve my concentration?

Distractions are a big issue when you want to concentrate better. You want to try to avoid things like going to the Internet to check your email, or to see if you can find a song on Youtube. That will just lead you to doing something else instead of the task at hand.

 

Some people say that caffeine helps them to concentrate better, but you can suffer from a crash that can destroy your concentration[1]. The same can be said for foods or beverages loaded up with sugar. Essentially what happens is that you're working your body harder for a short period of time and you then overwork it, causing the crash.

 

Smart drugs are something a lot of people swear by. You can look into nootropics, for instance. These generally don't cause a crash and can be put into a "stack", which is a combination of the chemicals that have the best effect. Personally I have tried a few and they are great at helping with concentration, my favorite being called noopept[2].

I find that some peaceful music without any words can be really helpful when I am trying to study. I like to listen to ambient CDs by composers like Brian Eno, Steve Halpern, or Laraaji. These are soothing and help me focus without distracting me with lyrics.

You may also find classical music to be a good choice. Many people like to listen to Mozart because they think it makes them smarter. This isn't actually true, but it is still a good choice. Background music also helps you drown out any distracting noises, like traffic or people talking in the next room.

 

Making sure that you have a routine that you stick to can also really help. If you get in the habit of studying at a certain time and place, it will eventually be a lot easier to get down to work. Be sure that your study space is free of distractions. This means no TV, turn off your tablet or smartphone, and don't check your e-mail every few minutes.

 

Be sure that anyone that you live with knows not to bother you when you are trying to study. Your studies are important, so don't be afraid to say no to people when you are busy. They need to respect your space and your needs so that you can get your work done.
