I am so excited for New Year's Eve! My son will be five, so for the first time, we are celebrating with him. He won't stay up until midnight; I think his "ball drop" will be at 9:30, which is still plenty late for him (two hours past his bedtime!).

I found some great activities on Pinterest. The first thing we are doing is not really an "activity," but my son will love it just the same. I'm preparing a menu of food that he loves (lots of finger foods, like crackers, cheeses, meats and fruits), and we are going to have kid "mocktails" for him to drink [1]! I'm going to melt white chocolate and dip the rims of a few glasses in the chocolate. I'll then dip the rim in sprinkles, to create a festive glass. Once that is done, I'm going to fill the glasses with apple juice. A few will have gummy bears in the bottom, while the others will have a piece of rock candy (turned upside down, so the wooden stick comes out of the liquid).

My other plan is to blow up a variety of balloons and use them to help count down to the New Year [2]. Each balloon will have a printed sheet of paper inside with an activity to do (put on a magic show, light sparklers, play a game, etc). On the outside of the balloon with be a time (like 7:15). At the appointed time, my little guy gets to pop the balloon and we complete the activity that is inside.

Have fun on New Year's Eve!

New Year's Eve is an exciting time for young ones. You can make this time special by doing some family activities together. Many families like to spend their New Year's Eve at home when they have younger kids. This is a perfect day to break out the board games and spend the day playing together. When it gets close to midnight, you can have poppers or set off some fireworks to celebrate the New Year.

Another idea is to discuss a family goal for the year- do more volunteer work, spend more time together or get fit are all great options. Listen to all of the ideas, discuss the pros and cons of each idea and then vote for the best idea. Once it has been decided, make a chart or a piece of artwork to commemorate the idea. Hang the chart/artwork in a prominent location to help keep you on track throughout the year.

Finally, if you have young ones that won't make it to midnight or you want to celebrate the New Year alone with your significant other, Netflix offers several countdowns to ring in the new year early. The New Year via Netflix will occur at 9:00 pm.
