Although there is some controversy with regard to the value of internships, the general consensus is that they are worthwhile. Some advantages of internships include:

  • getting on-the-job experience in the field to place on a resume
  • acquiring skills and knowledge in the field
  • determining whether or not the intern likes working in the field
  • possibility of receiving a job offer from the employer
  • possibility of receiving college credit and/or pay [1]

Regardless of the career field, most employers want their job applicants to have experience. An internship provides a student with a way to obtain experience that shows potential employers that the applicant has some exposure to the field and its requirements and expectations. In addition, actually working in the field gives the student a better idea of how well the chosen field suits him, which is something he may not be able to gain solely through attending classes, taking tests, doing lab work and writing papers. [1]

Although many internships are unpaid, some offer college credit, pay and/or housing. Receiving one of these forms of compensation is a bonus since the real value of an internship is the experience it provides. [1]

Due to the recent economic issues, many students find themselves undertaking multiple internships in hopes of securing a job eventually. Some feel that employers use interns as a cost-saving measure and that individuals in their twenties may drift from one internship to another, often realizing no or low compensation, and ultimately not landing a job. [2] Each individual must decide which course is best for him, and the fact remains that internships are an excellent way to get experience in the real world and build skills that may eventually improve one's job prospects. Internships are a fantastic way to gain valuable industry experience related to your field of study. So are internships really worth the effort?

Yes, absolutely! – but that is assuming that all the requirements are met. It’s important that your internship has real benefits, both to you and the employer. Your internship should have clear objectives and the expectations need to be clearly articulated.[1]

Internships offer you an opportunity to:

  • Gain relevant career experience
  • Develop your industry knowledge
  • Build your professional networks
  • Develop your skills and confidence
  • Boost your resume
  • Gain a competitive advantage in the graduate employment market

With or without pay, an internship is worth the effort in the long that is if you want to get out there and figure out what to do with your future.[2]
