Five of the solar system's planets that are visible to the naked eye will align visually for those of us standing on the surface of Earth. Those five planets are Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter and Saturn. It is the first such alignment in a decade. These are the so-called "bright planets" often visible individually in the sky. Uranus is occasionally dimly viewable by the naked eye, and Neptune and Pluto are not.

Even though it has been a decade since the last such alignment, another evening alignment is expected in August of 2015, although Mercury and Venus may be so low on the horizon that many locations in the Northern Hemisphere have trouble viewing them.

The current alignment will last early mornings through February 20th. A number of apps exist that can help you figure out when and where to look.[2]
