The White House does have a swimming pool  President Gerald Ford installed it in 1975 because he was an avid swimmer. His son took scuba lessons in it. Later, a cabana was built to allow those using the pool to change and shower. It also conceals the pool area from the West Wing of the White House. An underground passageway permits the first family to access to the pool from the West Wing without going outside. [1]

President Clinton added an outdoor spa to the pool area. In 2002, the cabana underwent renovations during which the roof was raised, windows were added and a solar array was placed on the roof. The solar array consists of pipes that collect heat from the sun to provide hot water to the cabana and to help heat the water in the spa. [1]

After the Fords, left the White House, Amy Carter, President Jimmy Carter's daughter, frequently made use of the pool. Barbara Bush and Hillary Clinton also used the pool often. [1]

At one time, there was an indoor pool in the White House. President Franklin D. Roosevelt had it installed in 1933. Since he suffered from polio, he used the pool to perform exercises to improve his physical condition. [2] This pool was situated in  the gallery area connecting the White House to the West Wing. President Truman used that pool, and President John F. Kennedy swam in it regularly at noontime and in the evenings. [3]

In 1975, President Richard Nixon had a tile floor laid over the pool, creating a press room on the site. [3]
