Dogs have four toes and pads on each paw. Some breeds have a fifth toe, called a dew claw, located on the inner part of the paw, which doesn't touch the ground. Dew claws are often removed from the hind legs when puppies are a few days old, before their nerves have fully developed. If not removed, dew claws easily catch on things, tear and cause injuries to the dog.
Dogs walk on their toes, so it is important to keep their toes and pads in good condition. Regular trimming of nails is necessary, Owners should also check between the toes frequently and remove any dirt, pebbles or other objects that may have become lodged there. Keeping the pads moisturized with a canine moisturizer recommended by a veterinarian can keep the pads from becoming cracked and infected.
