Calling an exterminator or professional in is always a good bet. If you decide to do it yourself, that is also an option. The trick to doing it yourself is killing the bugs you don't see.

Killing bed bugs you do see is easy. Pesticides are always an option, as is isopropyl alcohol. You can always just smash them too, as bed bugs are very fragile.

Any bedding suspected or known to be infected should be washed and dried thoroughly. Heat is the main concern when it comes to getting rid of bed bugs and their eggs. Thorough vacuuming is necessary, as is covering or enclosing a mattress or box springs in plastic or another similar cover.

If you live in an apartment, condominium, or other rented residence, notify the landlord or property manager. Pest control may be included already in your lease at no extra charge to you. Residents of attached units would love a heads up.

Controlling bed bugs by yourself can be quite difficult and time-consuming at times. It can involve moving furniture, household goods and personal items in your home. This is why you need to call a professional extermination service if your house is infested with bed bugs. If you decide to do it yourself, here are some tips to control bed bugs.

Insecticides are an important part of controlling bed bugs. Use the insecticides carefully according to the instructions on its label. Never treat bed bugs with insecticides designed to treat other insects. It may increase the bed bug infestation even further. Freezing the items infested with bed bugs is an easy way to kill them. The items should be left in the freezer for at least 4 days at a temperature lower than 0°F. Steaming is another effective way to destroy bed bugs. The surface temperature of the object being treated should be between 160-180°F. Use a commercial steamer to treat bed bugs. Vacuuming will also help contain bed bugs. However, the best option is to hire a professional exterminator to handle the issue effectively.

Bed bugs are notoriously difficult to get rid of.

You can start by making sure that all of the beds in your house have bed bug covers. Vacuum all of your floors well [1]. Cut back on clutter, but be careful when throwing items away; you don't want to move the bed bugs from place to place. Wash and dry ALL of the clothing in your house (this can be quite an ordeal) [2]. For anything that cannot be put into the dryer, use a steam cleaner to target the area.

Call a professional pest control company and get someone to come out and do a free inspection to make sure you truly have a problem. Bed bug treatments can be very expensive, but they are the best way to ensure that you do not continue to have problems with these little pests.
